Finance Support Officer

Reporting to the School Finance Manager, your financial expertise will be essential in providing advice, guidance and support to Superintendents, Principals and Vice Principals in order to establish and maintain financial controls. To achieve this, you will assist in the development and delivery of training and information sessions, provide guidance to Principals on how conduct financial reviews (regular budget reports, schools activity funds, petty cash reports and reconciliations) and to new school administrators and school office staff regarding Board policies, procedures and practices. As the Finance Support Officer, you will ensure optimal use of the board budget and school activity funds through timely reviews with school principals and superintendents that consolidate and analyze school activity funds data for the Public Sector Accounting Board. You will also investigate and prepare detailed variance analysis, provide advice and guidance to schools facing internal or external audits, and assist them in preparing for audits.
This role is ideal for a seasoned accounting professional able to confidently liaise with external auditors and communicate findings of variance analysis of school activity funds, provide updates to and maintain an Effective Practices manual, prepare draft finance procedures to ensure that they reflect changes in regulations and current best practices, and perform other duties, as assigned.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
A post-secondary degree/diploma, preferably in Business, Accounting, or Finance, a CA, CMA, or CGA designation, and no fewer than five (5) years’ accounting experience in progressively responsible positions, preferably in the public sector, have prepared you well for the role of Finance Support Officer. In addition, you’ll put the following profile to work in carrying out your duties:
- Knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Board (PSAB) accounting standards and Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Excellent analytical and report writing skills, and attention to detail.
- Excellent presentation and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Intermediate Excel, Word, Quicken, School Cash, FIS, Vista and PAM capabilities.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to working in a diverse school community and/or work environment.
The following strengths will be considered assets:
- Working knowledge of the Peel Board budget process.
- Mathematical aptitude.
