Job Description

Our client is looking for an Assistant to be accountable for the finance and accounting operations of all of its divisions. The incumbent will assist in preparing financial statements that follow all regulatory and accounting guidelines under the supervision of the Divisional Controller.

The Assistant Controller will assist the Divisional Controller with forecasting, budgeting, analysis, production of individual financial statements and reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of control and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the Company’s reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with IFRS.

The duties and responsibilities will include:

Reporting -


  • Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual individual financial statements and operating results
  • Assist in the preparation of the quarterly and annual reporting package for public company reporting
  • Participate in the production of annual budgets and forecasts
  • Calculate variances from budgets and report significant issues to management
  • Provide for a system of management reports
  • Ensure statutory reporting requirements are completed in a timely and accurate manner

Management -


  • Oversee and support operations of accounting departments for achieving the department's goals and objectives
  • Assisting in the formulation and monitoring of internal controls and policies to ensure that accounting activities are in accordance with established legal, regulatory requirements
  • Manage journal entries, invoices, etc. and reconcile accounts for the monthly or annual closing
  • Partner with Operations to define, measure, analyze, improve and control processes which impact customer quality and influence internal operating efficiency
  • Provide strategic analysis as required to drive improved decision making
  • Preserve updated knowledge of CRA and accounting requirements
  • Support accounting staff at subsidiary companies

Compliance -


  • Coordinate all government audits and year-end audit and preparation of audited financial statements
  • Review the Company’s accounting information to identify and resolve inaccuracies or imbalances
  • Comply with local, provincial, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings
  • Responsible for managing operational data and ensuring data integrity and accuracy


About You:


  • Experience producing financial statements and reports
  • Post-secondary degree/diploma in accounting or finance
  • 3+ years of experience as an Assistant Controller, or similar progressive related work experience
  • Successfully completed or in process of obtaining CPA accounting designation
  • Ability to travel occasionally within Canada
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Experience using QuickBooks considered an asset
  • Previous experience working for a public company is a strong asset
  • Previous experience working in the cemetery and/or funeral industry is a strong asset
  • Strong organizational skills and keen attention to detail
  • All candidates will be required to undergo background check
