Algoma is a leading Canadian shipping company, owning and operating the largest Canadian flag fleet of dry-bulk carriers and product tankers operating on the Great Lakes – St. Lawrence Waterway. Algoma operates 13 self-unloading dry-bulk carriers, eight gearless dry bulk carriers and six product tankers. The Company is a leader in dry-bulk and liquid bulk transportation focused on meeting the special needs of customers that ship products on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Waterway. Algoma’s dry-bulk fleet includes vessels of differing sizes and configurations, providing flexible shipping options for customers. In 2011, Algoma began construction on the Algoma Equinox, the first ship in a new class of maximum Seaway-Size self-unloading and bulk carriers. By 2018, eleven of these new vessels are expected to join the Algoma fleet, including one vessel owned by G3 Canada Limited and managed by Algoma on their behalf.

Job Description

Job Summary:            

Responsible for researching and developing accounting policies and procedures, as directed by the Vice-President, Corporate Finance, for a broad range of specialized accounting issues under IFRS. The Manager must analyze accounting issues and provide advice and counsel relating to various transactions.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and coordinate the implementation of accounting policies on a broad range of specialized accounting issues. 

  • Guide the analysis and assessment of the impact of proposed changes to IFRS, as well as changes in legislation and regulations affecting financial reporting (e.g. OSFI, OSC, etc.) for the assigned areas of accounting policy coverage.

  • Develop appropriate Company-specific accounting policies and procedures and co-ordinate their Company-wide implementation. 

  • Advise senior management of the proposed changes and the impact on the Company-wide and Business Unit results, in order to change business behaviour and practices, if necessary.

  • Plan and manage the development of accounting policies for specialized transactions.  This requires a consultative process with input from various departments and Business Units in order to properly identify issues, research possible alternatives under IFRS and, after considering priorities and implications, make recommendations.

  • Respond to accounting changes proposed by IASB and Regulators (OSC, OSFI, etc.).  These responses must represent and promote the Company’s.

  • Design and implement the necessary financial statement and MD&A disclosure requirements for specific topic areas.  This often involves taking a broad disclosure requirement and shaping it to meet the evolving needs of users of the financial statements.  Disclosure requirements must consider applicable accounting and regulatory standards for both quarterly and annual financial statements.  Appropriate documentation and procedures for ICFR compliance must also be considered.


Skills, Abilities and Experience:

  • Canadian CPA, CA designation.

  • 3 years experience in a related field post-designation.

  • A solid financial acumen, strong analytical and problem solving skills and will be expected to manage a number of projects/initiatives/reviews at any given time.

  • Able to research and understand a vast body of complex material in an efficient and productive manner to produce accurate results and present alternatives.

  • Superior communication skills, both orally and in written memos and other forms of communication.

  • Demonstrate a flexible approach in dealing with issues and implementation of IFRS, taking into account alternative treatments, different viewpoints and practical aspects of implementation.

  • Knowledge of current and proposed accounting standards and reporting requirements and the ability to assess the impact on the Company’s operations. 

  • Able to develop and maintain strong working relationships across many departments and Business Units of the Company.  This is critical to successfully perform their accountabilities.

  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and ability to learn to use various reporting tools to extract and present information from the Company’s accounting records.
