Project Engineer

Job Description

TRIUMF is Canada's national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics and accelerator-based science. We are an international centre for discovery and innovation, advancing fundamental, applied, and interdisciplinary research for science, medicine, and business.  Our Engineering Division has general responsibilities for the engineering, design and fabrication of mechanical, structural and electronic components, as well as being responsible for electrical and mechanical services and site maintenance. 


At present, our Engineering Division has an immediate opening for a Project Engineer who will drive a project to develop new approaches for design, maintenance and refurbishing of primary beamlines, production targets, and other highly active equipment.  An additional function, that will provide insight into the project, will be to provide specific mechanical engineering support for a medium term fix for a specific beamline and vacuum envelop.


The anticipated length of this term assignment is 3 years, and the position is well suited to an early to mid-career level Engineer looking to work in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment.  Responsibilities associated with this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Identify high value remote handling problems and identify approaches and technologies for dealing with them, including recommending appropriate corrective actions
  • Seeking out subject matter experts from industry, academia, and other laboratories for understanding technologies and generating and evaluating ideas
  • Preparing a comprehensive report summarizing the current state, detailing approaches and technologies considered, how those to prototype were selected, and results of prototype tests
  • Cooperating and communicating effectively with project manager and other project participants to provide assistance and technical support
  • Support project manager in completing medium term fix beamline joint and vacuum envelop


The position will require the successful applicant to complete the TRIUMF in-house radiation safety training course and be designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker.

  • Excellent knowledge of design and visualisations software such as AutoCAD; Solid Works.
  • Familiarity with rules, regulations, best practices and performance standards.
  • Ability to work with multiple discipline projects.
  • Project management and time management skills.
  • Proven working experience as a project engineer.
  • in a relevant engineering field and at least 5 years professional experience.
  • Membership or eligible for membership in the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC.
