Director, Equipment Engineering

Reporting to the General Manager, Engineering and Maintenance, you will direct a team of managers in all facets of engineering, design management, project deployment and related technical support. As Director, you will be the corporate engineering authority for Parcel and Lettermail equipment, street furniture and standard operating equipment.

YOUR DUTIES as Director of Equipment Engineering will be varied. Specifically, you will:

  • Develop and recommend the strategic direction and support of the relevant equipment for the Corporation in conjunction with stakeholders.
  • Establish or lead team participation in projects and major corporate initiatives, ensuring effective design integration and implementation of initiatives covering new equipment, modification, enhancement, refurbishment and end-of-life obsolescence.
  • Direct the structured central configuration of engineering specifications, drawings, and documentation related to the equipment under your authority.
  • Provide technical authority and expertise for all equipment, including maintenance requirements, design change management, equipment testing and spare parts lists.
  • Direct the development of safe use criteria, and establish safety design standards and adoption of relevant codes and standards.
  • Direct the ongoing 2nd level technical support service for national mail-processing equipment, and lead the establishment and subsequent management of long-term 3rd level technical support agreements with original equipment manufacturers.
  • Direct the development of technical details, including statement of requirements, technical evaluation documentation, and support for sourcing agreements, including contract management for equipment.
  • Direct the ongoing evaluation of relevant technologies for modernizing, improving performance functionality and reliability requirements, including evolving innovations and continuous improvement through a network of industry professional and postal contacts.
  • Direct the ongoing resource allocation for projects, ongoing operations, and directorate requirements, including succession planning, talent segmentation for responsible organization, health and safety of team, fiscal responsibility of budgets and organizational development.
  • Provide input to the corporate plan for 5- and 10-year plans regarding equipment investment.
  • Direct the development and act as corporate keeper of mail standards, including evaluation of customer mail samples, including barcodes, and integrate these activities with Lines of Business requirements.
  • Provide input to collective bargaining negotiating strategies regarding Equipment Engineering.

You bring to the role of Director, Equipment Engineering, A SUCCESSFUL TRACK RECORD that includes:

  • An undergraduate degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical or Industrial).
  • A licence as a Professional Engineer issued by one of Canada’s provincial or territorial engineering regulatory bodies.
  • At least 10 years of experience leading large and diverse teams in a unionized work environment.
  • Capability of building a strong collaborative environment.
  • Proven track record of achieving significant business results in a complex and demanding environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders at multiple levels in an organization.
  • Project management experience delivering large-scale equipment implementations.
  • Experience working in a technical environment where health and safety is a priority.
  • Knowledge of safety standards related to equipment implementations.
  • Practical experience in all phases of equipment implementations, including specification development, RFP & contract negotiations/award, installation, testing and hand-over.
  • Proficiency in English.
  • Bilingualism (English and French), a strong asset.
