Job Description

As the principal aide to the President, the Chief of Staff serves a supportive and facilitative role managing the coordination of the Office of the President in all facets of University Operations. The encumbent handles a wide range of matters of institutional importance on behalf of the President including day-to-day management and execution of special initiatives; oversees operations of the Office of the President, to include coordination of the budget, administration, policies, and procedures for the President’s Office; and ensures appropriate coordination and oversight in the development of defined core initiatives for the Office of the President. Serves as the President's primary strategic and planning liaison with University and community constituencies.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

Master's degree is an asset; at least ten years of related experience at a senior staff level.

  • Knowledge of the goals, objectives, structure and operations of a major public university.
  • Advanced analytical, evaluative, and objective critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to perform complex tasks and to prioritize multiple projects.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills and the ability to analyze, summarize, and effectively present data.
  • Ability to supervise and schedule work assignments.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively work with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Knowledge of institutional policies and procedures, regulations and bylaws, and the legal environment within which they operate.
  • Strategic planning skills.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups.
  • Knowledge of organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of the Government of Alberta and the various ministries that impact the University.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of the strategic needs of the community in the areas of public education and economic development.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with academic leadership, faculty, community leadership, and funding agencies.
