Job Description

Position Overview

The Specialist, Occupational Health & Industrial Hygiene (OH/IH) - Assurance, supports Nexen’s business through the provision of senior subject matter advice on all global OH/IH matters. This position, reporting to the General Manager, HSE-Assurance, Measures and Reporting, supports the overall Nexen Management System and is accountable to ensure standard development, review, implementation and audit, specific to OH/IH requirements. This position also collaborates with industry partners and key internal and external stakeholders to ensure Nexen’s standards meet or exceed regulatory requirements and industry best practice. The OH/IH specialist interfaces heavily with site personnel (including regular travel to site), site leaders, industry associations and CNOOC in order to provide guidance on best practices in OH/IH.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Act as the focal point subject matter expert for all OH/IH matters at Nexen

  • Manages sources of medical direction required for Canadian Operations

  • Develop, review and implement global standards specific to OH/IH for Nexen

  • Provide guidance and support to HSE team members promoting best practice related to OH/IH

  • Development, implementation and evaluation of OH/IH programs, education and training

  • Development, implementation and sustainability of the OH/IH strategy for Nexen

  • Identify trends in OH/IH and provide recommendations for future growth specific to OH/IH, as it relates to the HSE plan

  • Ensure quality, cost effective program delivery

  • Provide Nexen leaders with the knowledge and skills required to support OH/IH programs in their areas

  • Develop and execute an assurance program for OH/IH

  • Contribute to emergency management aspects including emergency response and pandemic planning

  • Represent Nexen - CNOOC in industry related stakeholder groups/initiatives including, but not limited to, IPIECA and CAPP

  • Collaborate with professional associations/regulatory bodies (is. CARNA, AOHNA, OSCA, OHS)

  • Vendor management in the provision of occupational health and industrial hygiene services

  • Collaborate with Nexen’s legal counsel and Privacy officer to ensure OH/IH programs are aligned with all relevant legislation, including privacy and Human Rights

  • Maintain Nexen’s electronic medical record system including configuration, administration and audit.

  • Act as custodian of Nexen’s medical records

Education & Experience

  • 5-10 years occupational health experience in the oil and gas industry

  • Bachelor of Nursing degree

  • Current registration & a member in good standing with the College & Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) or eligibility for the same

  • Occupational Health Nursing Certificate with Certification preferred

  • Demonstrated leadership experience in a corporate environment

  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of occupational health and industrial hygiene best practices

  • Demonstrated experience with standard development, program development and implementation

  • Demonstrated ability to interact with executive and senior level management

  • Good communication skills (written and oral)

  • Experience with Microsoft office

  • Exceptional understanding of legislation specific to OH/IH both provincial, federal and international
