The Office of the Alberta Health Advocates (OAHA) includes the Alberta Health Advocate and Mental Health Patient Advocate. Working collaboratively with the Mental Health Patient Advocate, the Health Advocate is a key contributor to a network of resolution processes that address concerns and complaints within Alberta’s health services environment.
An influential and highly credible leader, you will build critical relationships and engage diverse stakeholders to inform and address issues affecting health care in this province. Your commitment to advocacy will be essential in carrying out the Advocate’s legislative mandate to refer concerns to the appropriate existing channels, review complaints under the Alberta Health Act, and provide resolution support. Reporting to the Minister of Health on legislative matters and to the Deputy Minister of Health on administrative issues, you will serve as an impartial body and as a resource for the health community. You hold accountability for educating the public on roles and responsibilities within the system, providing information about health care services and programs, and assisting individuals in navigating their way to the appropriate resources to meet their needs. In your capacity as a senior advisor, you will report to the Minister on health issues that concern Albertans, and develop recommendations to improve health services and systems that drive change and influence positive health care outcomes for Albertans.
Your career reflects extensive senior leadership in a public serving organization, working with vulnerable populations and experience working within legislative parameters for handling sensitive, personal information. Recognized for your expertise in negotiation, mediation and conflict resolution, you have distinguished yourself as a champion in advocacy and mediation, and bring proven experience in investigative and complaint resolution processes. Your collaborative leadership style and commitment to consultation with diverse health system stakeholders will inform policy directions and ensure the delivery of client focused initiatives that are aligned with ministry and government priorities. You have established a reputation for inspiring a culture of excellence and mentoring teams to deliver service focused results, and possess acumen to manage sensitive issues in complex environments. Innovative problem solving skills and a systems approach will be critical in issues management and resolution of health related concerns facing Albertans. A related degree in health, social science or law and a strong understanding of Alberta’s health system and emerging health issues affecting Albertans are preferred.
The Health Advocate is appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council under section 3(1) of the Alberta Health Act. Remuneration is determined by the Minister of Health and reimbursed for reasonable expenses necessarily incurred in the course of performing duties as the Health Advocate, in accordance with Alberta Health and Government of Alberta regulations and policies as amended.
