The University Hospital of Northern British Columbia is seeking a Geriatric Psychiatrist. The selected applicant will have the opportunity to have clinical and/or academic affiliation with the UBC Northern Medical Program.
There is a memory disorders clinic that requires geriatric psychiatric input. There is a visiting geriatrician who also works at this clinic and a local neurologist. The geriatric psychiatrist would work at the Geriatric Assessment Clinic and would also do old age psychiatry through an outpatient clinic associated with the Elderly Services Team. There is also hospital consultation-liaison psychiatry required for geriatric patients and access to the inpatient psychiatric unit although there are no dedicated geriatric beds. There is also outreach to nursing homes which includes working with a behavioural psychologist and nurses on an outreach team.
The geriatric psychiatrist is expected to do general psychiatric on call which averages about 1 in 10 currently. There is the option of outreach to other communities with visiting geriatricians. There is an ECT service in the hospital.
The geriatric psychiatrist would be a full-time member of the department of psychiatry and would be involved in teaching medical students, family practice residents and psychiatry residents. A University of BC academic appointment would be encouraged for the successful applicant.
