About Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief

Founded in 1984 in response to the famine in Ethiopia, Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief (CPAR) is a non-profit organization working in partnership with vulnerable communities and diverse organizations to overcome poverty and build healthy communities in Africa.

Job Description

CPAR is seeking emergency physicians for short-term volunteer placements abroad

Are you an emergency doctor, or a family doctor with ER experience, with an interest in serving a community in Ethiopia? Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief (CPAR) is seeking qualified emergency doctors to take part in 4-8 week volunteer placements in a physician partnership program in Fitche, Ethiopia.

The Fitche Physician Partnering Project is a new partnership between CPAR and Fitche Hospital in Ethiopia.  The project’s goal is to strengthen the capacity of the hospital to deliver effective medical services, through the development of a knowledge sharing partnership between Canadian physicians and medical staff at Fitche Hospital. Other benefits are anticipated, including improvement to systems and processes at the hospital, and increased understanding for the participating Canadian physicians of the very serious challenges faced by the health care system and the people of Ethiopia.

CPAR is currently recruiting a roster of up to 30 Canadian emergency physicians or family doctors with emergency experience to volunteer for this multi-year project. Candidates are encouraged and provided an option to serve an additional 4-8 week follow-up placement during the course of the project.

Team members will work with local physicians to improve processes and share knowledge and skills. This will primarily be focused in the emergency department but will include other departments as necessary and relevant.  There may also be opportunities to teach residents, medical students, nurses and other health care providers.

TASKS:

  • Work alongside Ethiopian colleagues in the Emergency Department (or other clinical settings) to assess and treat patients.
  • Use this shared working experience to share knowledge. The primary goals will be capacity building, particularly with respect to clinical triage, assessment, treatment and disposition.
  • Share learning with colleagues. This may be in the form of instructional modules, formal teaching sessions or more informal teaching.
  • Teach other learners. These may be residents, medical students or other allied health learners.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Licensed physician in Canada or the U.S.
  • Emergency medicine emphasis which may include general practitioners with ER experience
  • Experience in work in low resource settings (at home or abroad) an asset
  • Flexibility, and an ability to adapt to variable working conditions and resource levels
  • Interest in teaching and learning
  • ATLS, ACLS, NRP, PALS or similar beneficial but not mandatory
  • Previous overseas experience desirable

Other Features:

  • CPAR will cover travel costs, transfers, in-country accommodation and a daily per diem. Otherwise this is an unpaid assignment that offers a unique and meaningful experience to the right candidates.
  •  There will be good support for participating physicians via CPAR’s excellent Ethiopian country staff, and from the medical staff and administration of Fiche Hospital.
  • CPAR will assist with all required licensing requirements and will provide pre-departure briefing.

Pre-Departure Costs to be paid by Participants

  • A visa for Ethiopia to be obtained and paid for by participants. CPAR will provide a letter of invitation as required by the Ethiopian Consulate.
  • A valid passport (with an expiry date at least 6 months beyond the date of their departure from Ethiopia).
  • Inoculations, medicines, and travel health insurance.
  • Costs for notarization and endorsement of official documents required for Ethiopian licence

Donation To CPAR
Participants are expected to make a minimum $500 donation to CPAR to cover in-country costs.  Any additional donations above this will go a long way to allowing CPAR to be able to provide other services in Ethiopia.

Interested candidates are asked to send a letter of interest and an updated resume to: jobs@cpar.ca. Recruitment for these positions is ongoing throughout the year.
