Critical Care Specialist
Northern Health Authority/UHNBC
Prince George, BC
The Division of Critical Care at the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia (UHNBC), is seeking to recruit intensivists to join the Intensive Care Unit physician group. Candidates must be eligible for licensure in the Province of British Columbia and preference will be given to those who either hold or are eligible for certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. All applicants must have fellowship training in Critical Care or equivalent Critical Care training from a recognised jurisdiction. Candidates who are interested in a fulltime FTE in Critical Care as well as those interested to work 0.5 FTE in the ICU and 0.5 FTE in their base specialty are invited to apply.
UHNBC is the Regional Hospital for Northern BC serving the population of Prince George (approximately 80,000) and is a referral center for outlying communities (total population approximately 400,000). The ICU is a combined adult medical, surgical and trauma ICU and regional referral unit for the whole of Northern BC.
UHNBC is also the regional surgical centre and offers, amongst others, major vascular and GI surgery services for which peri-operative ICU care is often required. The hospital is located down town, 20-minutes from the airport with direct links to the lower mainland and the interior. As the largest city in the region, it has all the amenities you’d expect but also maintains its friendly northern charm, surrounded by mountains, lakes and rivers with plenty to do for the outdoor enthusiast.
The ICU at UHNBC is a busy 10-bed unit staffed by six Intensivists from various base specialties, including anesthesiology and internal medicine. The unit handles all types of critically ill medical and surgical patients, excluding cardiac surgery and neurosurgery services at this time. The ICU functions as a closed unit and has state of the art equipment, protocols and practices, including point of care ultrasound, bedside tracheostomy and CRRT facilities. There is a 7-bed High Acuity Unit (HAU) linked to the ICU which functions as step down or overflow unit.
The successful applicants will join the group of lntensivists who manage all patients admitted to ICU and those under intensive care in the HAU on a shared rotational basis. All intensivists have an active role in contributing to the teaching and training of the Northern Medical Program medical students and residents as well as supervising critical care fellows rotating through the unit. There is an opportunity for the successful candidates to join the UBC academic faculty at a level commensurate with their qualifications and experience. There will also be opportunity to get involved in quality improvement projects and service development such as physician support in critical care outreach, tele-health and follow-up ICU clinic with plans to expand the unit and services delivered at UHNBC.
If you are currently practicing or within one year of graduating, and are interested in opportunities in Northern BC, we would invite you and your spouse to come and explore practice opportunities and the city of Prince George.
