The Northern Health Authority is seeking a family practitioner in Queen Charlotte, BC to cover a long term leave of absence, from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018. This is an exciting opportunity to practice medicine in one of the one most beautiful places in BC - Haida Gwaii.  

Physicians and Staff are part of a community-run project in health care delivery designed to give a team approach to health care. The brand new Queen Charlotte/Haida Gwaii Hospital officially opened summer 2016.  

The new facility, which serves a population of 2500, features a modernized environment for the delivery of public and mental health and addictions programs, and home and community care services. The newly reconfigured hospital layout benefits the delivery of acute and emergency services including:

  • Eight acute care beds

  • One labour, delivery and recovery suite

  • Designated program space for diagnostic imaging, laboratory and pharmacy

  • Eight long term care beds 

Hospital services include:

  • General practice and basic emergency coverage

  • Minor surgery

  • Stabilization of trauma patients and critically ill patients

  • Midwifery

  • Alcohol and drug counselling

  • Public health nursing services

  • Social work services

  • First Nations community health workers 

Haida Gwaii consists of between 150 and 200 islands off the northwest coast of British Columbia. Queen Charlotte is the largest community and is located at the south end of the Graham Island, providing services to a population of approximately 3,000. There are many local historical sites, and art and cultural activities. Local industries include forestry, commercial fishing and tourism. 

Activities include:

  • Exploring miles of beach

  • Whale-watching

  • Hiking in Gwaii Haanas National Parks Reserve

  • Visiting museums and historical sites such as homesteads, decommissioned whaling stations and ancient Haida villages where totem poles and artifacts lie undisturbed in their original sites.

  • Shopping for local art

  • Chartered fishing

  • Exploring local craft fairs

In order to be eligible for British Columbia licensure your postgraduate training must meet the requirements of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. Post graduate training must be obtained from an accredited and approved training program in a jurisdiction sanctioned by the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
