McMaster University’s Department of Medicine is a vibrant, successful and well-funded department within the Faculty of Health Sciences and plays a major role in the research and educational mandate of the Faculty. The vision of the department is characterized by a collegial, interprofessional, and inter-institutional cooperation, working to achieve goals of excellence in health education, research and clinical care, which embraces the continuum from the basic science laboratory to the individual patient, to the health care system.
The Department has three interdependent goals: (a) to facilitate the provision of the highest quality of patient care giving appropriate consideration to cost effectiveness and utilities, (b) to take responsibility for the quality of educational programs offered by McMaster University for physicians-in-training and those practicing in the disciplines of General Internal Medicine and the medical subspecialties, and (c) to develop and critically evaluate new knowledge across a wide range of disciplines from basic science to the clinical disciplines of General Internal Medicine and the medical subspecialties, to the health care system itself. The Department of Medicine sets priorities for its research endeavors based upon excellence, societal relevance, the availability of collaborative links, the opportunity for national and international significance and additional criteria as deemed appropriate.
To achieve these goals, the Department of Medicine has grown rapidly in all aspects of its mandate. It is the largest department in the Faculty of Health Sciences and the largest at McMaster University. The Department is home to over 660 faculty located across our partner hospitals in city of Hamilton, at distributed campuses in the Niagara and Kitchener Waterloo areas, and the broader community. The role of Chair is an extraordinary opportunity to play a key leadership role in the Faculty of Health Sciences while supporting excellence in academic, research and clinical interests within the Department. The Chair is accountable for the overall administration of the academic department and for the relationship between the Department and the broader academic community.
