In the role of Medical Director, Internal Medicine you will be a physician administrator and leader who works to achieve a collaborative working relationship between physicians and administration based on the IH vision, mission and goals as they relate to the delivery of medical services. Reporting through the site Chief of Staff to the Executive Medical Director for the site you will work with medical-staff colleagues and site leadership in areas supported by the Department of Medicine physicians, to optimize access to safe, efficient, high-quality medical and clinical services as well as be accountable to ensure alignment of planning and practice with provincial and IHA-wide priorities and strategies.
In the role of Internal Medicine Department Head, you will be responsible for the organization and management of the medical staff within the department. You will lead the ongoing growth and development of the Department as the tertiary referral centre and hub for patient focused specialized medical services for all the communities of the Thompson, Shuswap and Southern Cariboo regions of BC. You will encourage innovation in the development of medical services both within the Department and across the geography of the Interior of BC. You will ensure excellence in clinical practice and promote standards of quality and conduct that reflect Interior Health’s Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Policies. You will show leadership in all academic matters within the Department, fostering collaboration with UBC academic professionals to ensure that education and research objectives are developed according to Master Affiliation Agreement and to encourage teaching and research within the Department.
Ideally the roles will be combined with one successful candidate in a full time position however candidates may also be considered separately for each part time role. Both positions requires fixed (dedicated) and variable (flexible) time to meet specific deliverables based on the requirements for site specific medical services and are 3 year term renewable by mutual agreement between the agency and the individual.
This is an exciting time to lead and implement a new vision for Medicine at RIH as the site opened a new Clinical Services Building in 2016, and is anticipating another expansion with the addition of a Patient Care Tower to be open to patients in 2022.
The Royal Inland Hospital (RIH) is a 246-bed facility that serves as the referral centre for approximately 250,000 people, and is located in the Thompson Cariboo Shuswap Health Service Area. As one of two Interior Health tertiary referral hospitals, RIH is a no refusal centre with an Emergency Department that receives over 250 major trauma and 62,000 visits per year.
Kamloops offers high-level, specialty medical care including core physician specialties, 24-hour Emergency and Trauma Services, Ambulatory and Outpatient Clinics, and Diagnostic Services. Specialty services include Acute Inpatient Psychiatry, Tertiary Inpatient and Community Psychiatric Services, non-interventional Cardiology, Infectious Disease, Neurology, Gastroenterology and others. Support services include: a full complement of diagnostic equipment, a Clinical Neurophysiology Lab and Sleep Lab, 1.5T MRI, and CT scan, and Echocardiography. RIH also features TPA Stroke, Stroke Thrombolysis, and provincial Tertiary Neuropsychiatry Programs. RIH is the regional base for the six-person, 24-hour High Acuity Response Team (HART) that is utilized in remote emergency transport situations. Surgical services include General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Vascular Surgery, Otolaryngology, Plastic Surgery, Urology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and 24/7 Anesthesia coverage.
