The Faculty of Medicine at The University of British Columbia together with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) and Providence Health Care (PHC) invite applications for the position of Head, Department of Medicine and Regional Medical Department Head, VCH/PHC. The successful applicant is expected to establish strong clinical and administrative linkages with all six Health Authorities in British Columbia. This appointment is for a five (5) year term with the possibility of renewal, subject to satisfactory review. It is expected that the successful candidate will qualify for and be offered a full-time UBC appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure and hold the Eric W. Hamber Chair.

The Faculty of Medicine, together with its partners including B.C.’s Health Authorities, provides innovative programs in the areas of health and life sciences through a province-wide delivery model. The Department Head will provide leadership by creating and advancing a provincial departmental mission, strategic plan and goals that align with the Faculty and the University. They will promote the Faculty’s principles of excellence, engagement, equity and effectiveness and will facilitate collaboration across the Faculty and University.
The Department of Medicine is the largest department in the Faculty of Medicine. The Department has more than 120 academic faculty and 800 clinical faculty who are engaged in teaching, service and research across the spectrum from basic biomedical research to health service delivery. The Department’s 18 divisions are distributed among teaching hospitals and university sites across the province.
In accordance with the Mission, Vision, Values and strategic and ethical frameworks of VCH and PHC, the Regional Department Head, Medicine, VCH/PHC will work in collaboration with the Site Department Heads to provide overall medical leadership to all members of the Department at VCH and PHC sites, and lead the overall regional medical human resource planning and the review of medical and clinical quality of the Department’s activities. In addition, the successful candidate will provide clinical, academic and strategic advice to VCH and PHC leadership developed in consultation with Site Department Heads and Department members.
The successful candidate will bring a proven track record in senior clinical, academic and administrative leadership roles, demonstrated success in supporting the career development of MD and PhD faculty members, demonstrated excellence in teaching and commitment to undergraduate, graduate and post graduate medical education, and a proven record of scholarly excellence in research at an international level. The successful candidate should hold an MD and be eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C. and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The anticipated start date is January 1, 2018 or upon a date to be mutually agreed.
