Calling Nova Scotia home means ocean views, active living and welcoming communities. Practicing here means working with passionate colleagues, providing world class care, and helping people be healthy and stay healthy, for generations. The Nova Scotia Health Authority provides health services to Nova Scotians and some specialized services to Atlantic Canadians. We operate hospitals, health centres and collaborative community-based programs across the province.
The Eastern Zone is supported by the two regional hospitals and a host of community hospitals and health centres. Specialty services are distributed among the two regional hospitals located in Sydney and Antigonish, serving a population of over 180,000 people with a network of over 330 physicians.
Located on the very Eastern point of Nova Scotia is the stunning scenery of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park where the road climbs along the edge of Nova Scotia and it is a regular occurrence to hike among moose in their habitat. The trail winds around some of the most breathtaking views, beaches and golf courses in the province. Enjoy the port city of Sydney and see the World’s Largest Fiddle on the friendly waterfront boardwalk. Take in one of many summertime festivals and hear the best music from across the world and right here in the province.
The Department of Psychiatry provides service to Nova Scotia Health Authority’s Eastern Zone which covers Antigonish, Guysborough, and Cape Breton Island. This is a cohesive team with members from diverse backgrounds dedicated to providing quality care.
Antigonish has one inpatient mental health unit while Sydney has three inpatient mental health units. We have inpatient withdrawal management/detox units in Richmond County and Sydney. Our inpatient and community outpatient teams consist of social workers, nurses, occupational therapists, recreation therapists, and psychologists.
In Cape Breton, satellite clinics for mental health and addictions operate in the communities of Inverness, New Waterford, Glace Bay, and North Sydney.
Other services include: seniors’ mental health, community outreach teams, clozapine and depot clinics, consult service for adults with neurodevelopmental disorders, consultation with medical units and emergency department and full Child and Adolescent clinical service.
The department provides 24/7 on-call coverage to the inpatient mental health units and emergency department. They provide in-house consult from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and phone consult after hours. The emergency department in Cape Breton is supported by an Emergency Crisis Team of mental health social workers and nurses from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
Sydney’s Cape Breton Regional Hospital is a teaching hospital. We help train medical students as well as family medicine and psychiatry residents through Dalhousie University. Research support is available locally and through Dalhousie.
