UNIVERSITY of OTAGO AND SOUTHERN DISTRICT HEALTH BOARD
An opportunity has arisen for a Specialist in Ophthalmology to take up a full-time joint Academic and Clinical position with the University of Otago and Southern District Health Board, based at Dunedin Hospital.
For your academic duties you will be based in the Department of Medicine, Dunedin School of Medicine, and, depending on your level of academic experience, will be appointed to the position of Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor. You will have academic qualifications and prior experience in teaching and research, and would be responsible for teaching at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Alongside teaching you will have unlimited possibilities for laboratory and clinical based research.
On the clinical side, Dunedin Hospital has almost 400 beds and provides care for a population of approximately 180,000 spread over the lower South Island of New Zealand. Allocation of time for clinical duties and patient care is 50% of the working week. Ophthalmology duties will be conducted as part of a shared roster with six other consultants (approximately 4 FTE). Other duties include participation in team ward rounds, quality and safety activities, audit and clinical review meetings. Additional payment is made for clinical duties outside of regular hours.
Outside of work, you’ll find life in Dunedin to be very easy with its affordable living, great schools, laid back lifestyle, world-famous wildlife on the Otago Peninsula and proximity to Central Otago for skiing, mountain biking, hiking and much more. The town centre is compact but has plenty of energy, which is to be expected with it being a student-town. This sustains some great activities such as theatre, live-music and a great selection of restaurants and cafes.
