The Department of Anaesthesia in partnership with the Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta in the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, invite applications for a Contingent Term full-time academic position, at the Assistant Professor level. The successful candidate is expected to lead and participate in the collaborative, multi-disciplinary aortic surgery program within Calgary Health Zone. The successful candidate is expected to further the Cardiac Anaesthesia Section’s involvement in local, national and multi-national trials related to cardiac anaesthesia and surgery.
Qualifications include an MD with certification in Anesthesiology, a Cardiac Anesthesia Fellowship and the Advanced NBE Certification in Trans-esophageal Echocardiography. Eligible applicants must have a demonstrable interest in anesthesia for aortic surgery and expertise in aortic imaging and strain analysis. Applicants must also present evidence of a strong publication record, evidence of successful teaching and supervision, and evidence of academic engagement in professional and other communities.
The successful candidate will devote approximately 50% of their time to clinical (cardiac anesthesia),
45% to research and 5% to teaching. Eligibility for licensure in anaesthesia in the Province of Alberta is mandatory.
The cardiac anesthesia group consists of ten anesthesiologists practicing at the Foothills Medical Centre. 1350 open cardiac surgical cases are performed annually, including complex valve reconstruction, minimally invasive valve surgery, extracorporeal circulatory support and ventricular assist device insertion, as well as thoracic aortic surgery and endovascular aortic repair (approximately 150 total aortic cases/year). The cardiac anesthesia group also provides services for transcatheter aortic valve implantation, complex electrophysiology procedures, and pre-operative assessment of patients coming for heart surgery.
The Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta is housed within the rapidly growing Cumming School of Medicine and has over 100 principal investigators and research teams, with a broad range of interests in Cardiovascular Medicine.
