Job Description

Opportunity – Burlington ON  

Position Overview

Reporting to the Vice President of Estimating, the successful candidate is an experienced Heavy Civil Estimator with bridge and roadworks estimating experience who will prepare and/or coordinate complete estimates including analyzing specifications, proposals, takeoffs, and other documentations to prepare estimates.


  • Identify scope of work and perform quantity take off from RFQ information

  • Develop a strategic and competitive plan for each tender as per contract specifications:  labour, equipment and materials

  • Conduct detailed analysis of the contract specifications, to determine overall project requirements (bonding, insurance, etc.)

  • Careful monitoring of published addenda’s that may alter the scope of work/budget

  • Assemble accurate, timely and well organized estimates for review by the estimating team

  • Organize sub-contractor quotes when the bid is successful, re-writing binders, and assisting the buy-out process

  • Establish a critical path schedule on the estimated milestone progress dates; active participation in project hand off meetings

  • Interpret project drawings, and specifications, analyse proposals and other documentation

  • Budgeting/scheduling

  • Understands trade scope of work/jurisdiction

  • Confidently assist in the preparation of the final tender document for submission in order to meet contract deadline

  • Review tender opportunities with Senior Management


  • Strong understanding of computerized estimating systems: Heavy Bid; Jonas; Excel, spreadsheet design and formulas

  • Intermediate knowledge of key principles involved in bid preparation, including quantity take off procedures, sub-trade procurement, pricing and bid closing procedures

  • Ability to identify risk associated with contract/project documents

  • Understanding of Drawings and Technical Specifications

  • Ability to Obtain and Build Unit Pricing

  • Understanding of Trade Scope Definitions and Local Market Conditions

  • Understanding of Varied Contractual Terms & Conditions

  • Ability to work indenpendently, or in a group environment



  • Post-secondary education in civil engineering or equivalent combination of technical training and/or experience.

  • Minimum 5 years continuous service estimating heavy civil bridge projects and/or project controls, with field experience.

  • Must have Bridge/heavy civil, concrete, steel, pile driving, coffer dam experience.

  • Ability to take the lead estimate on smaller projects is a plus.

  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Gold Seal certification in estimating would be considered an asset.
