The University of Calgary’s Schulich School of Engineering invites applications for an appointment with tenure at the rank of Professor to serve as the Department Head, Chemical and Petroleum Engineering. This is a key leadership position within the Schulich School of Engineering (SSE). The Department Head appointment is a five-year term, renewable and subject to review.

The research in the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Department involves transforming raw materials into useful products, through chemical and electrochemical processes, for a wide range of industries including oil and gas, environmental, manufacturing, polymer, biochemical, and biomedical.
The Schulich School of Engineering is searching for an outstanding and proven leader and scientist to assume the role of Head of the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering. We are seeking a candidate who has achieved excellence in their career, and has the potential to be a strong and effective leader. The successful candidate must successfully strengthen the department in the context of the University’s Eyes High strategic direction and the Faculty’s Strategic Plan Energizing Engineering Education, while interacting with industry, government, and the broader community on a regular and sustained basis to promote the department. It is required that the Department Head will have earned a PhD degree in a related discipline and either is registered as a Professional Engineer or is eligible to be registered as a Professional Engineer.
The successful candidate will be considered relative to our Faculty Council’s “Appointment, Authority, and Responsibility of Department Heads” document, which states:
“The position of Head should be held by someone who has the personal respect of students and colleagues, who is a teacher and scholar, but who is willing to assume for a time special responsibility for the harmonious and effective functioning of the University at the department level. In departments which prepare students for professional careers (e.g. in the Schulich School of Engineering), the Head should also have earned the regard of non-academic colleagues. During the period of appointment, a Head is expected to put the interests of the department ahead of one’s own research interest.
The Head should be appointed for devotion to education and research, for intellectual, professional and administrative abilities, and for qualities of leadership.”
