We are currently looking to add an experienced Marine Cargo Surveyor to join our team in Markham. The Marine Cargo Surveyor is responsible for assessing and determining the cause of damage for cargo in transit. The successful candidate will have international experience, ideally working with Lloyds of London, identifying the nature and extent of damage arriving from overseas.

Negotiation skills:

  • Provide recommendations to underwriters for a quick closure on the claim
  • Interact with multiple stakeholders to review loss details and provide recommendation for a speedy resolution of the claim

 Communication Skills:

  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal
  • Able to work with client to defer answers where it is required

Responsibilities

Assessing Damage (50% time allocation)

  • Assess damage using understanding of routing and shipping procedure
  • Make recommendations for settlement of claims after review of damage to cargo and ship
  • Looking for patterns of activities; understand shipping timelines; looking at past historical knowledge (past  experience)
  • Integrity when dealing with conflict on a claim – if the loss is warranted; unbiased in decision making as possible

Analysis and Reporting (50% time allocation)

  • Understand reporting procedures and protocols
  • Able to follow client reporting instructions
  • Able to identify nature and cause of the claim

 

Education, knowledge and experience required

  • 10 or more years working at sea, preferably as Captain, second Engineer or officer
  • Previous experience as a surveyor or in a similar role
  • Successful completion of exams within transport Canada ; DOT UK
  • Successful completion or significant progress toward obtaining a CIP designation an asset
  • Proven track record of handling cargo claims with integrity where conflict may arise
  • International cargo experience
  • Experience with cargo damage, hull and machinery is required
  • Computer skills – familiarity MS Office and Outlook is essential; strong English writing skills;

 

 Environment/Working Conditions:

  • Willingness to travel locally and internationally is a requirement of this job (50% of the time);
  • Working on a ship will require the incumbent to climb and engage in other physical activity in order to assess damage
