Job Description

Dalhousie Financial Services strives to provide the highest quality financial services and information, and ensure the effective stewardship of University assets to the benefit of students, research and other scholarly activities. Services provided include Financial Accounting, Budgeting and Planning, Procurement, Risk Management, Financial Systems and Policies.

Reporting to the Assistant Vice-President, Financial Services, the Controller is responsible for management and leadership of University accounting functions (student accounts, cash and general ledger accounting, accounts payable, and capital, research and special purpose fund accounting) and financial reporting. The Controller is a senior position within Financial Services, and is a trusted advisor and strong contributor within Financial Services and the overall University community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the preparation of financial information and reporting for internal and external clients, including managing the annual audit and preparation of the University’s annual financial statements.

  • Manage and monitor the financial practices, policies and procedures in general accounting and financial reporting for the University, to maintain strong systems of internal control.

  • Oversee the centralized accounting functions including accounts payable and student accounts receivable.

  • Assist with the planning and budgeting of capital projects; ensure that appropriate procedures are implemented to account for capital projects and related funding.

  • Oversee University tax matters and reporting. Provide advice on procedures as required.

  • Oversee the University’s insurance program including recommending changes as identified in process/policy to improve risk management.

  • Oversee accounting and reporting on research and special purpose fund accounts.  Ensure that the expenditure of those funds is monitored and controlled in compliance with policy and grantor and legislative requirements.

  • Identify analytical techniques and methods necessary to support sound financial planning and decision making.

  • Manage a team of approximately 40 professional and clerical staff. 

Qualifications: The successful candidate will have an Undergraduate Degree in a field such as Business and a Professional Accounting Designation (CPA).  The successful candidate is a seasoned professional with proven managerial and leadership skill at a senior level across a variety of accounting functions. The candidate will demonstrate an ability to work effectively as part of the Financial Services senior management team in a busy, deadline-driven team environment. Must be able to work effectively to build trust and confidence within Financial Services, with senior administration, colleagues and clients throughout the University.

Salary Range:  $86,573 - $117,129 per annum (ADM-09)
