The Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health (OCMOH) promotes and protects the health of Albertans, providing public health expertise to support health surveillance, population health and disease control initiatives on issues of public health importance.
A recognized public health specialist, you will assist the Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) in monitoring and reporting on the health of Albertans, and play a critical role in advising on and supporting implementation of public health policy, standards and practices. With responsibility for specific public health files, your role is vital to maintaining the capacity of the OCMOH to oversee and provide leadership for improved public health, and to delivering expert medical direction that supports policy development within the OCMOH and the department. Your focus is system wide as you collaborate with other ministries, Alberta Health Services and front-line public health providers in the provision of public health medical expertise. As an integral member of the OCMOH, you will share accountability for achieving government public health priorities.
Your medical career has revolved around a passion for public health and reflects extensive public health experience in leadership roles and an understanding of intervention strategies and disease control. You thrive in high paced environments, understand the core functions public health, legislation and legislative frameworks, and policy development, and are equipped with innovative thinking about the delivery of public health services. A consultative approach and ability to collaborate and build trusted relationships at all levels within your organization and with strategic partners is essential for success. Knowledge of Alberta’s healthcare system goals and government priorities will support you in this role. A medical degree and license to practice, or eligibility to be licensed to practice medicine in Alberta is required. A Royal College certification or equivalent specialty training in community medicine/public health, and license to practice as a specialist in Community Medicine/Public Health and Preventive Medicine is strongly preferred. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered. Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
