Job Description

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Providence Health Care is seeking a full-time Medical Microbiologist.  The candidate will be joining a group of innovative microbiologists and virologists based at St. Paul’s Hospital, a 455-bed tertiary academic hospital located in downtown Vancouver, BC.  It is the largest facility within Providence Health Care and one of the two major teaching hospitals in Vancouver Coastal Health Authority.  The hospital has major programs in HIV/AIDS, cardiology, nephrology, urban medicine, elder care, and mental health.

The successful candidate will deliver diagnostic and consultative services relating to all aspects of Medical Microbiology, including virology, bacteriology, mycology, molecular diagnostics, infection prevention and control, and antimicrobial stewardship.  Significant responsibilities include providing medical oversight for routine and specialized laboratory testing (analytic) and serving as a liaison between the laboratory, clinical programs, and medical teams (pre-analytic and post-analytic), both internal and external to the hospital.  The successful candidate will carry particular responsibility for some aspects of virological testing, and specialized training and experience in clinical virology would be considered an asset.  You will be expected to participate in the on call service for Medical Microbiology at Providence Health Care.

Planning for a new St. Paul’s Hospital is well underway. The new St. Paul’s Hospital represents a tremendous opportunity to incorporate the latest thinking in health care delivery and technological innovation.

St. Paul’s Hospital is affiliated with the University of British Columbia and teaching of undergraduates and residents is an integral component of this position.  Preference will be given to applicants who can provide evidence of current involvement and commitment to education.  The successful candidate will become a member of the University of British Columbia Clinical Faculty; academic rank will be determined in accordance with previous academic record.

Applicants must be medically qualified (MD or equivalent), hold a fellowship (FRCPC) in Medical Microbiology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or international equivalent), and be eligible for licensure from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.

Providence Health Care and the University of British Columbia hire on the basis of merit and are committed to employment equity.  We encourage all qualified persons to apply, however, Canadians and permanent residents of Canada will be given priority.
