Job Description

ROLE SUMMARY

Under general direction and supervision of the Manager, Financial Audits, the Senior Financial Auditor is responsible for planning and conducting financial and regulatory compliance audits of Executive Office functions and Regional operations, to assess the adequacy of internal controls, the overall effectiveness of operations and to ensure compliance with company policies and procedures.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts complex and detailed audits of various Executive Office functions.

  • Conducts comprehensive audits of regional accounting, human resources, and privacy areas.

  • Assists with supervising the work of the Financial Auditor.

  • Performs complex audit procedures, including identifying and defining issues, developing criteria, reviewing and analyzing evidence, and documenting processes and procedures.

  • Conducts interviews, reviews documents, develops surveys/memos, and prepares final working papers.

  • Identifies and documents complex issues and develops recommendations using independent judgement.

  • Communicates the results of audits using written reports and oral presentations to senior management.

  • Develops and maintains positive working relationships with internal clients and various stakeholders.

  • Assists with the annual risk assessment process and development of the annual audit plan.

  • Assists with the annual budget process and quarterly variance analysis.

  • Assists with conducting special reviews of financial areas on an ad-hoc basis.

  • Performs work on behalf of the external auditors during the year-end audit.

  • Pursues professional development opportunities and professional association memberships.

  • Represents Internal Audit on project teams and at management meetings.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 5 years external or internal audit experience, or a combination thereof.

  • Professional accounting designation (CPA, CA, CMA or CGA).

  • Bachelor of Commerce degree or other related post-secondary degree.

  • Professional audit designation (CIA and/or CFE), or commitment to obtaining same.

  • Insurance related experience, or commitment to obtaining the CIP designation.

  • Ability to travel 6 to 8 weeks throughout the year to locations within Canada and the United States.

  • Strong analytical/problem solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to meet project deadlines.

  • Strong negotiation skills, including the ability to present issues in a convincing manner.

  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare

  • clear and concise audit reports.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and as part of a team.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with highly sensitive and confidential information.
