Job Description

STATUS: Independent Contractor 

For the duration of the project, the Independent contractor – SME’s primary contact will be the Director, Academic Programs & Product Development.

The SME will be required to identify key gaps in broker knowledge and create/write content for 1-hour, self-paced eLearning courses.

Responsibilities of the Independent Contractor - Lead SME

Industry Research and Knowledge

  • Provide broker industry/market awareness

  • Identify key gaps in current broker knowledge

  • Identify, procure, and leverage resources (other SMEs, journals, industry research, etc.) to support current knowledge for the development of a variety of broker courses and topics (both personal and commercial lines)

 Custom Course Development

  • Collaborate with IIC instructional designer to identify course goal(s) and create associated learning objectives for each course

  • Write content for eLearning delivery that will align all content to key learning objectives/course goals

  • Work with standard curriculum templates

  • Collaborate with instructional designer to edit case studies/scenarios

  • Develop and/or edit formative and summative assessment questions

  • Provide content support to Instructional designer/Vendor during course development as required

 Quality Assurance

  • Liaise/partner with eLearning vendor(s) to ensure content is accurately developed

  • Liaise/partner with IIC instructional designer and project manager to beta test each course


  • Extensive Broker knowledge (technical, industry, etc.)

  • Ability to research and write technical broker content

  • Demonstrated ability to write content aligned to course goals and learning objectives

  • Self-starter

  • Initiative and judgment

  • Works well in teams and independently

  • Very good attention to detail

  • Excellent communication skills – written and verbal


  • CIP and/or CAIB

  • Level 1 Broker license preferred

  • CTDP is an asset


  • Broad broker technical experience (personal lines, commercial lines, specialty lines, etc.)

  • 2-3 years’ experience delivering training and/or developing learning materials

  • Have managed and coordinated multiple projects and resources with competing deadlines

  • Demonstrated success working with internal and external team members and/or volunteers to achieve project goals

  • Developed courses to be accessed via a learning management system/eLearning is an asset
