Job Description

The AVP, Underwriting – Marine Cargo is responsible for managing the production and underwriting of Marine Cargo, Hull and Liability business for the Toronto Marine Department, and for assisting the other Canadian Branches in meeting their Marine production goals. This position works closely with the VP, Marine Manager for Canada in the development and execution of strategic goals and underwriting strategies for the Marine line of business.



  • Responsible for the overall production and underwriting of business within the Ontario region to achieve Department profit, sales and growth objectives for the Marine line of business.
  • Attain or exceed branch and individual production goals.
  • Support broker relationships and ensure Department strategies are carried out. Focus on effective relationship management at the appropriate level of the brokerage. Ensure we engage the right CNA resources and deliver on our commitments.
  • Support Underwriter’s technical development within the Toronto Marine Department.
  • Support a high performance culture through effective communication and quality goal setting, differentiation of compensation and performance, proactive management of top performers and retention of top performers for the Marine line of business.


  •  In consultation with VP, Marine Manager, responsible for strategic planning, developing and implementing new products, initiatives and processes for the Marine Line of business.
  • Ensure the achievement of continued profitability, growth and/or operational efficiencies for Marine through assessment of risk tolerance, market appetite and emerging risk issues.
  • Responsible for underwriting referrals and providing assistance to the Senior Marine Underwriters, Underwriters and Associate Underwriters to meet their production, profit and retention goals for the Marine line of business.
  • Assimilates trends in the industry, determines underwriting best practices and contributes to training & development initiatives for line of business.


  • University degree plus a minimum of 10 years marine industry experience. Completion of professional insurance designation preferred.
  • Established market relationships with senior marine brokers within Canada; expertise and knowledge of distribution and the competitive market environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, with the ability to motivate, coach, and develop staff.
  • Advanced communication skills which are critical to building consensus across area of influence, teams and/or matrix environment.
  • Strong analytical, organizational and time management skills.  Must be detail oriented.
  • Ability to drive results by identifying and resolving problems within scope of responsibility.
