Overview:
Reporting to the General Manager West RMX, the Operations Manager leads a local team of Plant Managers responsible for the Metro Vancouver Ready Mix area. This includes the planning, coordinating and supervising of the concrete plants to meet daily, weekly and monthly production targets, mentoring the team of Plant Managers and maintaining a strong safety and environmental culture with our workforce. The Operations Manager is also the main stakeholder with Labour Management responsibilities of our collective agreement in a unionized work environment.
Responsibilities:
The Metro Vancouver Operations Manager works with their operational team to ensure the seamless interaction of the individual departments of safety, sales, production, logistics and quality. The Operations Manager directly manages a team of 5 Plant Managers, 1 Operations Support Manager and Plant Supervisor. The Operations Manager also indirectly manages, through their Plant Managers, a team of over 120 unionized workforce members. The Union workforce consists of roles such as Plant Operators, Equipment Operators, Drivers and Labourers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Promotes a positive safety culture through leadership by example; performs all work activities following all relevant safety policies and procedures

Ensure all Plant Managers take full responsibility for all Health and Safety concerns and the implementation of Company policies

Manage and lead all employees, specifically Plant Managers and Ready-Mix Drivers

Career development for their team of Plant Managers, Operations Support Manager and Supervisors.
- Travels as needed to meet with Ready-Mix Drivers to ensure management visibility

Ensures a complete investigation of complex customer issues, including root cause analysis and problem resolution utilizing de-escalation techniques as required

Interacts directly with Fleet Manager to maintain communication contract requirements of the concrete mixer fleet maintenance contract

Drive Labour Relation improvements both financially and in terms of employee engagement with participation in labour negotiations
Results / Accountabilities:

Uphold Lafarge's commitment to safety by implementing and enforcing rigorous safety protocols and procedures. Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and promote sustainable practices within the plants.

Identify opportunities for operational improvements, cost savings, and productivity enhancements.
- Lead and mentor a team of plant managers, operators, delivery personnel and support staff.
- Foster a positive work environment, promote teamwork, and provide training and development opportunities to enhance employee skills and productivity.

Sets and monitors Operations Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

Collaborate closely with the sales team to understand customer requirements and ensure timely and accurate order fulfillment. Address customer concerns promptly and proactively seek opportunities to enhance customer satisfaction.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement best practices, streamline processes, and drive operational excellence.
Dimensions / Relationships with Others’ Jobs:

Matrix reporting structure to General Manager West, Ready Mix

Directly supervise up to 5 Plant Managers, 1 Operations Support Manager and Operations Supervisor.

Works closely with the GVA senior management team (Production Manager, Sales Manager, Customer Care Logistics Manager, Quality Manager, Finance Manager, General Manager East, Field Operations Supervisor.

Oversees over 120 union hourly employees (Production Personnel, Drivers, Labourers)

Works closely with raw material suppliers such as Cement, Aggregates, Admixtures and Speciality Product suppliers.
- Responsible for labour management engagement with the Teamsters Local 213
Qualifications:
Education and Work Experience:
-
Post Secondary Diploma or University degree an asset
-
Minimum of 5 years of management/supervision experience
-
Experience in a construction material supply business considered an asset (ready mix concrete, aggregates, asphalt, construction etc)
-
Experience in a unionized environment
-
Demonstrated strong application user skills for both MS Office Suite and Google Suite. This includes MS Excel, MS Word, Google Sheets, Google Docs at a high level.
