OVERVIEW
The Salumatics CHIMA Certified Experienced Health Information Coder performs detailed analysis of Inpatient (DAD), Day Surgery (NACRS) and Emergency (NACRS) health records using ICD-10-CA and CCI diagnostic and intervention codes to facilitate resource planning, resource utilization, statistics, clinical research, and related audits.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Assign diagnostic and procedural codes to inpatient records (DAD) and/or outpatient records (NACRS) using ICD-10-CA-CCI according to CIHI, Ministry of Health and client facility guidelines
- Analyze electronic medical records to abstract demographic and clinical information from patients’ health records in accordance with CIHI’s (Canadian Institute for Health Information) Standards, Guidelines and Principles and specific client Hospital Policies/Procedures
- Remain current with changes in coding practices, CIHI Standards, Guidelines/Principles regarding DAD/NACRS data elements including CIHI annual fiscal year updates
- Remain current with Ontario coding practices and funding requirements as well as HIG/CMG/RIW/CACS grouping/assignment
- Participate in peer review audits both internally and externally as required based on coder experience and training
- Initiate data quality guidelines for all abstracted data to ensure accuracy of documentation, coding, and length of stay data
- Assist with the development and maintenance of client specific coding manuals and policies and procedures related to the quality of client records in order to monitor compliance with legislative requirements and accreditation standards
- Assists with the development and implementation of quality improvement audits related to client records
- Participate in Coding Quality Improvement webinars, conference calls as required for each specific client (project ramp up, ongoing coding practices for a client facility, etc.)
- Submit a completed/abstracted patient information to CIHI as required based on coder experience and training
- Monitor case weight and verify uncertain clinical information with client or through delegated project liaison for accurate data collection, submissions process to CIHI and other reporting bodies
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum of three (3) years recent DAD and/or NACRS job experience
- Demonstrated advanced skill in Folio
- Advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology and medical terminology
- Proficient understanding of current CIHI DAD and NACRS Coding Standards
- Proficient understanding of CIHI indices and comparative reports
- Proficient understanding of HBAM (ON), HSFR (ON), QBP(ON),CMG, CACS, and RIW
