About the role
Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Temporary full-time Medical Laboratory Technologist - National Platelet Immunology Reference Lab (NPIRL) Lab to join our dynamic team.
In this role, you will be responsible for accessioning, testing, interpreting and reporting results, preparation of reagents and equipment for daily use. You will perform these duties in accordance with all Canadian Blood Services Operating Procedures and manufacturer’s instructions.
Formula for success

Performs activities to prepare for testing by receiving reagents and kits for testing, preparing lab equipment for routine operation and performing quality control and quality assurance procedures.

Accessions patient and donor samples into Laboratory Information System, assesses samples for suitability, selects the appropriate testing for sample type received, prepares samples for testing.

Performs specialized testing procedures, then acquires data to interpret test results using automated instrumentation and computer assisted analysis when required.

Prioritizes workload, collaborates in a laboratory ‘community of practice’ to manage patient cases in order to meet turnaround time.

Recognizes unusual test results and assesses need and/or value of further testing

Prepares comprehensive reports for distribution

Performs platelet donor searches

Notifies the Charge Technologist or designate of any problems
Desired education and skills
-
Graduate of an approved Medical Laboratory Technology training program with attained certification or eligibility for certification by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) is required.

Current registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Manitoba (CMLTM) is required, or eligible to obtain registration.

A minimum of one year experience in a Transfusion Medicine related lab or experience working in a molecular laboratory is preferred.

General knowledge of hospital and various laboratory policies and procedures, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), is required.
OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. -
Ability to develop and maintain professional working relationships with departmental staff, management, volunteers, customers, and the general public.

Competency in the use of Laboratory software, computers within a Windows operating system using Microsoft Word, Excel, and e-mail software.

Strong organizational and time management skills.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

Displays telephone etiquette and maintains high professional standards.

Demonstrates good listening skills.

Ability to follow instructions, document work and assume responsibility for own work.

What you can expect

Typically this role works Monday to Friday with shifts between 0730 - 1630, however this is subject to change and you may be required to work evenings and weekends.

Extended periods (2 or more hours duration) of sitting, standing, walking and lifting supplies and equipment that may exceed 10 kg throughout the course of the regular work schedule.
